Sunday 19th April
2.00pm Celebrating 160 Years of Church Life in Matarawa
We warmly invite you to join us for this special commemorative service as we reflect on our journey and look ahead with hope. Rev Shirley Spooner will bring words of encouragement and inspiration for this significant occasion.
Matarawa Community Church, 648 No. 2 Line (on the way to Fordell).
History: St. John’s Anglican Church, at Matarawa, near Fordell. 1866 – the old church was left consecrated for many years so that all denominations could use it. Even so, the same congregation attended each week, and these people learned to be tolerant and friendly toward the other denominations. As the old building deteriorated, the current church was built and opened in 1908. Over 115 years later, the church was deconsecrated on 1 June 2025 by Anglican clergy . After that service, it ceased to operate as an Anglican church and was transitioned into a community church arrangement (the building was “gifted” to a local group for wider Christian/community use).
